About OpenAI

OpenAI builds artificial intelligence models and products, including the ChatGPT assistant, the Codex coding agent and APIs that developers use to build on its models. Its stated mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.Source [6]Source [9]

It was announced in December 2015 as a nonprofit research company with Sam Altman and Elon Musk as co-chairs, Ilya Sutskever as research director and Greg Brockman as CTO, backed by $1 billion in pledged funding. In 2019 it created a for-profit subsidiary, and ChatGPT, released on November 30, 2022, became its main consumer product.Source [1]Source [10]Source [9]Source [11]

Under a recapitalization announced on October 28, 2025, the nonprofit became the OpenAI Foundation and the for-profit became OpenAI Group PBC, a public benefit corporation. The Foundation controls the company, appoints its board and held a 26% stake at closing, Microsoft held about 27%, and employees and investors held the rest. The Foundation board is chaired by Bret Taylor and includes CEO Sam Altman.Source [9]Source [12]

OpenAI said in March 2026 that it was generating $2 billion in revenue per month, and CNBC reported 2025 revenue of $13.1 billion. ChatGPT had more than 900 million weekly active users by May 2026. The company closed a $122 billion funding round at an $852 billion post-money valuation in March 2026, and in September 2026 Altman said it would not go public that year.Source [6]Source [13]Source [14]Source [15]

What happened

Announced in December 2015 as a nonprofit AI research company, with Sam Altman and Elon Musk as co-chairs and founding members including Greg Brockman and Ilya Sutskever. Musk left the nonprofit's board in February 2018, and in 2019 OpenAI created a for-profit entity, OpenAI LP, with Altman as CEO. In November 2023 the board removed Altman as CEO, saying he had not been consistently candid in his communications with it; he returned as CEO later that month under a new board, and a law firm review commissioned by the board concluded in March 2024. In October 2025 OpenAI completed a recapitalization: the nonprofit, renamed the OpenAI Foundation, controls a public benefit corporation, OpenAI Group PBC, in which Microsoft holds roughly 27 percent. In May 2026 a federal jury found Musk's lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman and others was filed too late, and Musk said he would appeal. In September 2026 Altman, still CEO, said the company would not go public in 2026.Source [1]Source [10]Source [16]Source [17]Source [18]Source [19]Source [12]Source [20]Source [15]
