About X.com

X.com Corporation was incorporated in March 1999 to provide internet banking services and was based in Palo Alto, California. Elon Musk founded it after the sale of Zip2 and served as its CEO from March to December 1999; Harris Fricker, Christopher Payne and Ed Ho are named as co-founders.Source [1]Source [4]Source [2]Source [3]

In August 1999 the company described plans for a financial services site that would itself provide banking, mortgages, stock and fund trading and its own mutual funds, including an S&P 500 fund, rather than referring users to other providers. It had about 15 employees at the time.Source [4]

Bill Harris served as president and chief operating officer from November 1999 to January 2000 and as CEO from December 1999 to May 2000, when Musk returned as CEO. Michael Moritz of Sequoia Capital joined the board in August 1999 as a condition of Sequoia's Series A investment.Source [1]

X.com merged with Confinity, maker of the PayPal product, on March 30, 2000. By October 2000 the combined company had decided to focus on PayPal and close its internet banking operations, and in February 2001 it changed its name to PayPal, Inc. Musk bought the x.com domain back from PayPal in July 2017.Source [1]Source [5]
