About TIDAL
TIDAL is a subscription music streaming service. It was launched by the Swedish company Aspiro, which Jay-Z's Project Panther Bidco bought in early 2015 before relaunching the service with a group of artist-owners.Source [6]Source [7]
Sprint bought a 33 percent stake in January 2017 for about $200 million. In March 2021 Square (now Block) agreed to buy a majority stake for about $297 million in cash and stock, with Jay-Z joining Square's board and artist shareholders keeping the remainder; Block reported holding 86.8 percent in 2022.Source [4]Source [3]Source [7]
Under Block, TIDAL cut about 10 percent of staff in December 2023, removed its free tier in March 2024, and eliminated its product management and product marketing teams in late 2024. Block said in November 2024 that it was scaling back its investment in TIDAL, after recording a $132 million goodwill impairment on the business earlier that year.Source [1]Source [2]Source [8]
