About Hoodmaps

Hoodmaps is a crowdsourced map where users tag city areas as hipster, tourist, rich, normie, suits or university zones and add short labels, to give travelers a quick sense of a city.^{Source [1]}^{Source [3]}

Levels built it from the first line of code to launch in public on Twitch and Twitter in July 2017 and wrote that over 300,000 people used it after it hit Reddit's front page.^{Source [2]}

He lists it among projects that failed commercially, while still naming it among his current sites. In 2026 he added crime data for most cities and US Census median income data.^{Source [1]}^{Source [4]}^{Source [5]}^{Source [6]}

What happened

Pieter Levels built Hoodmaps in public in July 2017, streaming the build on Twitch, and it reached the front page of Reddit. On his projects page he classifies it as a project that did not take off or make money, but the site remains online and he added crime data in 2026.^{Source [2]}^{Source [1]}^{Source [5]}
