About

Courtland Allen is an American web developer and designer who created Indie Hackers in August 2016, a website and community where founders of profitable online businesses and side projects share their stories, usually with revenue figures.Source [2]Source [1]Source [3]

He studied computer science at MIT, graduating in 2009, and then started a company called Syphir, which ran out of money. In 2011 he went through Y Combinator with Taskforce, a Gmail extension that turned emails into tasks, co-founded with Niccolo Pantucci.Source [4]Source [1]Source [5]

Stripe acquired Indie Hackers in April 2017, less than a year after launch, after Stripe CEO Patrick Collison emailed him proposing the deal. Allen became a Stripe employee working only on Indie Hackers, and his brother Channing joined as a co-founder.Source [3]Source [6]Source [2]

In March 2023 the Allens spun Indie Hackers back out of Stripe as an independent business, with Stripe as a seed investor. Allen has said the Stripe period was his only salaried job. He also hosts the Indie Hackers podcast, started in 2017, and does the site's design.Source [2]Source [7]Source [1]
