About
Palmer Luckey is an American entrepreneur and hardware designer from Long Beach, California. He built the prototype virtual reality headset that became the Oculus Rift and co-founded Oculus VR in 2012, which Facebook agreed to acquire in 2014 for about $2 billion.Source [1]Source [2]Source [3]
Luckey began building head-mounted displays as a teenager. From 2009 to 2012 he took college classes and worked at the University of Southern California's Institute for Creative Technologies while developing the Rift prototype, and in 2012 the Oculus Rift Kickstarter campaign raised $2.4 million.Source [1]Source [3]
He left Facebook in March 2017. Later that year he co-founded Anduril Industries with Trae Stephens, Brian Schimpf, Matt Grimm and Joe Chen to build autonomous systems and software for the U.S. military and its allies. Anduril was valued at $61 billion in a May 2026 funding round.Source [4]Source [5]Source [6]
Anduril's newsroom identifies him as the company's founder. He was quoted as founder when Anduril took over the U.S. Army's Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) program in 2025, a project he linked on his blog to his teenage work on the Army's BRAVEMIND project.Source [7]Source [8]
Outside Anduril, he founded ModRetro, a retro gaming hardware company whose Chromatic handheld went on sale in 2024. In September 2026 Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth named him a co-lead of Project Meridian, a Pentagon study of future warfare and military technology.Source [9]Source [10]Source [11]
