About The Washington Post

The Washington Post is a daily newspaper and news website based in Washington, D.C. It was founded in 1877 by journalist Stilson Hutchins, and Amazon's proxy statement describes it as a winner of more than 75 Pulitzer Prizes.Source [1]Source [5]Source [2]

For decades it was the flagship of The Washington Post Company, led by the Graham family. In August 2013 that company agreed to sell the newspaper and related publishing businesses to an entity owned personally by Jeff Bezos for $250 million, and the sale closed on October 1, 2013.Source [3]Source [4]Source [2]

The Post earns money from digital subscriptions, print sales and advertising, and Amazon discloses buying advertising, digital content and data licensing from it as related-party transactions.Source [5]Source [2]

In February 2026 the Post cut about one-third of its workforce, and publisher and CEO Will Lewis left days later. Chief financial officer Jeff D'Onofrio became acting publisher and CEO, and Matt Murray is executive editor.Source [6]Source [7]Source [2]

What happened

First published on December 6, 1877, it was owned by The Washington Post Company until October 1, 2013, when that company completed the sale of its publishing businesses, including the newspaper, to Nash Holdings LLC for $250 million. The August 2013 announcement said the buyer belonged to Jeff Bezos in his individual capacity and was not Amazon. Amazon's 2026 proxy statement says Bezos owns The Washington Post.Source [1]Source [8]Source [3]Source [4]Source [5]
