About Pixar Animation Studios

Pixar Animation Studios is a computer animation film studio in Emeryville, California, owned by The Walt Disney Company. It began in 1979 as Lucasfilm's Computer Division, headed by Ed Catmull, and became an independent company in 1986 when Steve Jobs bought the division from George Lucas.Source [1]Source [4]Source [3]

The studio developed its own tools, including the RenderMan renderer, and released Toy Story in November 1995 as the first computer animated feature film; Pixar's IPO followed days later. Disney has distributed all Pixar features, and the studio's films include Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Up, Toy Story 3, Inside Out and Coco.Source [1]Source [6]

Disney bought Pixar for $7.4 billion in stock, completing the deal on May 5, 2006; Pixar kept its brand and Emeryville headquarters, and Catmull and John Lasseter took over Disney's animation studios as well. Inside Out 2 (2024) became the highest grossing animated film of all time, according to the studio.Source [4]Source [5]Source [1]

Jim Morris is president and Pete Docter has been chief creative officer since 2018. Beyond features, Pixar makes series and shorts for Disney+ and licenses RenderMan and its Universal Scene Description technology, now promoted through the Alliance for OpenUSD.Source [7]Source [1]
