About Gumroad
Gumroad lets creators sell products such as video lessons, e-books and subscriptions through links or a storefront, with one-time, recurring or fixed-length payments.Source [3]Source [4]
Founder Sahil Lavingia, previously the second employee at Pinterest, launched it on Hacker News in 2011. After failing to raise a Series B, he laid off most of the team and kept the company running as a profitable business, publishing its monthly financials from April 2018.Source [1]
By January 2021 it ran with no full-time employees, paying part-time staff hourly at location-independent rates; successful sellers such as Daniel Vassallo worked as part-time executives.Source [2]
In April 2025 it published its codebase, later under the MIT license, and acquired Small Bets as a step toward offering community support to creators beyond payments.Source [5]Source [6]Source [7]Source [8]
What happened
Sahil Lavingia built Gumroad in a weekend in 2011 and raised $1.1 million and then $7 million in May 2012. Growth stalled after 2014, the team shrank from a 2015 peak of 23 employees to Lavingia alone by 2016, and the company refocused on profitability and later on part-time contractors. It released its source code in April 2025 under an MIT license and bought the Small Bets community from Daniel Vassallo the same month.Source [1]Source [2]Source [5]Source [6]Source [8]
