About Chan Zuckerberg Initiative
The Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) was founded in 2015 by Priscilla Chan and Mark Zuckerberg to work on problems from curing or preventing disease to improving education and supporting local communities. It operates through four entities: an LLC, a 501(c)(3) private foundation, a donor-advised fund at the Silicon Valley Community Foundation and a 501(c)(4) advocacy organization.Source [1]Source [5]
Its largest program is science. In 2016 it committed $3 billion over a decade to help scientists cure, prevent or manage disease and created the Biohub research center with $600 million. In November 2025 Biohub launched a large-scale initiative combining AI with biology, brought in the EvolutionaryScale team, and set a goal of 10,000 GPUs of compute by 2028.Source [6]Source [7]
It also works on education, bringing learning science into classroom tools, and funds nonprofits in the communities where Chan and Zuckerberg live. CZI reports awarding about $7.22 billion in grants and investing nearly $300 million in ventures since 2015.Source [1]
