About Alameda Research
Alameda Research LLC was a Delaware-organized quantitative trading firm specializing in crypto assets, with operations in the United States, Hong Kong and The Bahamas. According to the SEC, it began with arbitrage trading and later added market making, yield farming, volatility trading, over-the-counter trading and debt and equity investments.Source [1]
Sam Bankman-Fried and Gary Wang co-founded it in or around October 2017 and were its sole equity owners, with about 90 and 10 percent. Bankman-Fried was CEO until around October 2021, when Caroline Ellison and Sam Trabucco became co-CEOs, and Ellison became sole CEO around August 2022. Alameda was the primary market maker on FTX when the exchange launched in 2019.Source [1]
Alameda filed for Chapter 11 in November 2022 in the FTX bankruptcy case in Delaware. On December 13, 2022 the CFTC charged Bankman-Fried, FTX and Alameda with fraud, alleging FTX customer assets were held by and commingled with Alameda.
